Ultrasound vascular diagnostics process of female patient's legs with varicose veins, clos

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound provides a non-invasive assessment of arterial and venous blood flow. "Duplex" refers to the measurement of the 3-dimensional anatomy as well as the flow dynamics with pulse-wave doppler. Performance and interpretation of these studies require specialized vascular training.

Non-Invasive Vascular Studies

Each of these studies requires 30-45 minutes to be performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist or a Vascular Physician.

Venous Reflux Study

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound for patients with varicose veins and/or long-term leg swelling. This study determines whether the natural valves in the veins are functioning appropriately. There is "reflux" of venous blood flow if not.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Study

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound study for patient concerned for DVT (blood clot). Usually this is for the lower extremity, but it can occur in the upper extremity. The exam is usually done urgently for patients with sudden onset of unexplained swelling and/or pain.

Carotid Artery Duplex

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound of the Carotid and vertebral arteries in the neck that provide the blood flow to the brain. Carotid artery narrowing is one of the most common causes of stroke in the United State. You may be referred for risk factors such as a history of smoking or because of physical exam findings.

Peripheral Arterial  Duplex

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound of the arteries in the legs assess for blockages that may be causing insufficient blood flow to reach the foot. This exam can also be performed for the upper extremities. This exam is a common first stem in assessing unexplained leg pain, especially in patients with suspected peripheral arterial disease (PAD).

Aorto-iliac Duplex

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound assesses the size of the aorta and iliac arteries. These are the largest vessels in the abdomen and pelvis and can enlarge to become aneurysms at risk of rupture. This study also measures the flow through these vessels as arterial blockages can occur even in these large vessels.

Mesenteric Duplex

Vascular Duplex Ultrasound of the upper abdomen shows flow through the blood vessels going to the abdominal organs. To look for narrowing of the arteries to the kidneys is the most common reason to perform this study.
